Hi gentlefailers,

By mildly popular request, here's a  [livejournal.com profile] fail_fandomanon   friending meme! I'm cross-posting it to DW and LJ, and there's also an official Tumblr post here: http://failfandomanon.tumblr.com/post/50880814316/fail-fandomanon-friending-meme-you-asked-for-it

Answer only the ones you want to, and add anything else you think should be there. I just ran with the enthusiasm and didn't want to spend forever making up questions and miss the moment, so feel free to add anything else you think should be there/questions nobody's ever asked that you'd love to answer.

Friend away!

Current fandoms: Mostly into Homestuck, DC Comics, and Star Trek (TOS and AOS). I'm also reading Gunnerkrigg Court and Shingeki no Kyojin and watching Hannibal and Arrow. Super excited about the new Fast and Furious as well.

Past fandoms: Marvel comics and bandom.

Favourite FFA threads: WIP threads, I love seeing what other people are working on.

Favourite FFA critter: Seals > Ponies

Things you'd love to have more conversations about: Comics! I know there's the lol_meme spinoff about comics but it's just so slow. I'd love someone to talk about WIPs with as well.

What your journal's like (personal/fannish/picspams/etc): Mostly updates on things I'm working on and the occasional picspam. Trying to get better at posting conversational stuff, I'm migrating away from tumblr. Just disenchanted with the site's tone.

Friending dealbreakers: I can't think of any. Just try not to be a jerk? I'll kick you out if you're too big a jerk I guess.

Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc. I'm in my 20s and live with my parents. I write and do some art, mostly mixed media paintings. I'm disabled, so my personal life isn't terribly exciting except for playing trivia a couple times a week.

Sites where you'd like to be added: Dreamwidth mostly, but I'm also on tumblr.

We share some fandoms (Utena, Hannibal, anime and manga in inclination if not in actual familiarity on my side), and although I still haven't quite figured out what the canon is I adore the Marathon threads so much. Willing to give this a whirl? :D

Haha, I totally came at this backwards via tumblr, but here I am, finally. XD

-Current fandoms:

Star Trek (AOS mostly, and TOS)
Doctor Who (new!Who)
Sherlock
Skyfall/reboot!Bond

Also more or less in:

One Piece
Kuroshitsuji
Bioshock

And starting to get into Hannibal, we'll see how that turns out.

- Past fandoms:

Er, in order and only the major ones:

Earthian
FFVII
Gundam Wing
YYH
Harry Potter
Supernatural

I never really leave fandoms, just gradually become less active. Sometimes interest may ignite again.

- Favourite FFA threads:

"Things you wouldn't admit unanon" and "unpopular opinions". Because I love discussions, but I'm such a no-name fan that even my controversial posts get no answers!

- Favourite FFA critter:

Kraken!

- Things you'd love to have more conversations about:

Any fandom meta, really. Of fandoms that I'm in/know about the canon, I mean. I don't tend to take things personally, so I'm completely fine with disagreement, even strong disagreement. Though I might argue back just as fiercely! I never make ad hominem attacks, though.

- What your journal's like (personal/fannish/picspams/etc):

Mostly fannish talk about what I've seen/read/played. Sometimes about things I've done, too, only at the moment I mostly work and nothing much happens.

- Friending dealbreakers:

Well, if we have no fandoms in common there might not be a whole lot to talk about? Though "dealbreaker" might be a little strong a word. In all probability I think other people will have more problems with me than the other way around, haha.

- Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc.

My life right now is not very exciting, I'm afraid! Single, work in a bookshop (a very nice bookshop specialising in SF/F books and films, though), trying to muster up the energy to continue with my degree in Japanese.

- Sites where you'd like to be added:

Here or on tumblr is great! I talk more in my Dreamwidth and reblog nice gifs on tumblr.

Hi! We don't have too many fandoms in common (my thread is here: http://cloudsinvenice.livejournal.com/35938.html?thread=207970#t207970) - I like RTD!Who and Sherlock, and HP, but nothing else among what you've listed. However, I realllly like your journal - the Khan-explanation was fascinating (I've never seen anything Trek) and I loved your thoughts on Django (one of my favourite films everrrr) and anyway I'd like to add you for your movie reviews! Is that okay?

Oh, by all means! I'm happy you enjoyed my pretty scrambled thoughts on Django, but yeah, it was great, wasn't it? I loved that film so much. And thank you for your kind words about my attempt to collect my thoughts on Khan in his various incarnations!

I've been talking about that female character thing with another person in my circle, and it's been really fun, I just haven't had the time to do it myself. I'll probably come around and comment on yours rather than do one myself, heh.

Mmm, re-listening to the Django soundtrack now. I particularly loved the part of your review where you waxed lyrical about Foxx's performance - I was absolutely smitten by him and the nuances he brought to the role, but most reviewers don't mention it! So, I was glad to see I'm not alone.

Also, yessss, please come around commenting! I am having lots of fun doing the women meme, which I didn't expect - I don't usually do meta - and I love that people are reacting to it!

Current fandoms:
Les Miserables
LotR/Tolkien in general (forever fandom)
Age of Sail
Marvel 616
Bit of MCU
Saiyuki
Star Trek (TOS, AOS, need to get around to watching the others)

Long list of other things I'm interested in if they come up but don't actively seek out; including but not limited to:
Sherlock Holmes (ACD); Vorkosigan saga; Battlestar Galactica; Discworld; AtLA; a few bits of DC comics (Green Arrow and some Batman); various novel fandoms, especially historical fiction and sf/f, and horror; some historical RPF. In terms of historical stuff, I have a preference for the 19th century (+late 18th and early 20th through WWI), in Europe and in Japan, though other periods and countries are also cool.

Past fandoms:
I don't really leave fandoms very often, the only things I'd definitely class as "past" are probably Harry Potter, Bleach and D.Gray-Man.

Favourite FFA threads:
100 words, and any heavy-duty meta discussions that show up

Favourite FFA critter:
Belladonna and Thor

Things you'd love to have more conversations about:
- meta about any canon, especially character analysis
- history! I would really like to have more people to talk about history with - I keep reading all these cool things and I want to chat about them, both to flail about how history is cool and to bat stuff around so I'm more sure I understand it
- science fiction, especially hard sf, especially especially older stuff, and also related real-world science (space. is. so. cool.)

What your journal's like:
at the moment, mostly empty, except for a few fics, and some flocked personal stuff. I want to post more but it feels weird talking to no-one in particular; I would make more meta posts etc. if I thought anyone was listening. Oh, and some original-ish fic for this universe, of which there should be more when I get off my butt and do shit...

Friending dealbreakers:
Um, nothing in particular? Like, I don't want to be friends with you if you're transphobic/homophobic/a rabid Tory, but if you're any of those things chances are you don't want to be friends with me either.

Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc:
- 22, British but living in Japan until September, doing an internship as part of my Japanese degree.
- I half wish I'd done a science degree instead (I miss physics ;;) but only half.
- I try not to get into SJ stuff online too often but I do have Opinions. I can't really define my political position beyond "very left-wing", but that should be an indication. I'm more likely to comment on other people's rants than to have my own, though.
- I'm trying to start writing fic again, recently, which I haven't done for years.

Sites where you'd like to be added: here, mostly. I have a tumblr under the same username but I haven't been on in months, so while you're welcome to follow me you probably won't get much out of it any time soon.

Past fandoms Not actively posting about, but interested in
Hannibal, A Song of Ice and Fire, Durarara, Suits, Ghibli films, mythologies and fairy tales, science fiction as a genre

Favourite FFA threads
The ones where nonnies try to apologize for tl;dr geeking out, because it's as good an indicator as any that there I am, eating up every delicious word. Canon discussions, or any thread that offers an excuse to go on about a canon I love (or even better, gives someone who can articulate a point instead of haplessly circling around it a reason to...). Civil disagreements about The Right Way to Do Fandom. Anime/manga threads in general, as I'm a recent transplant from Western fandoms. Poetry.
You'd love to have more conversations about
The tiny fandoms we might share: Watsonian interpretations and headcanons, bolts of inspiration we can or can't write, things we adore beyond explanation and things that sometimes bother us. Meta, both fandom-specific and about fandom and our thought processes in general, from "you wrote an essay, I coo over it" to "we casually discuss/argue about for thirty comments a tangent of contention from an unrelated post, cackling in delight all the way". [Your area of competence or interest], applied in a fannish context. Narrative kinks and conventions. Cultural influence.

Some other things about you
"Over"analysis and "over"long expressions of fannish joy make my heart grow. I gravitate toward worldbuilding that convinces us the universe is not our own and intense ambiguous relationships between characters who exemplify "very fucked up, broken by some standards, but still here"; femslash potential and female characters who rewrite the rules when practical are also excellent inducements to read/watch something. I love LoTR a lot, but I can't seem to read fic for it (although I love Legolas/Gimli too) -- I guess the Silm has a lot more holes in it that fic gets at? Not with boarding AUs, maybe, but in other ways.

Oh, yessss, Silmarillion is more elliptic! For me, the difference is also that Silm is less, hmm, intertwined with the style of writing? Like, it's written in varying tones and there's always a storyteller's distance over it. So it's easier to write fic for it in any style - whereas, with LotR, the prose is very immediate and grand, and I have the need to imitate it but don't have the skill.

Yeah, there's a distinct advantage for telling the story from thirty-thousand feet! I've not read many Silmfics that imitate the actual style of the book, for which I am deeply grateful.

Current fandoms: Marvel 616 & some aspects of the MCU, Warehouse 13, Elementary (but I cannot describe how over I am any and all comparisons of the series to That Other One Yes, I like it; yes, I think many of the decisions it makes are really smart and I like discussing them; no, I don’t want to talk about them in the context of That One Adaptation, but anything else is fair game.), Marathon games, theatre, most incarnations of Scooby Doo. A lot of book and video game fandoms, many of which are probably fandoms-of-one or at least very small.

Long list of other things I'm interested in if they come up but don't actively seek out; including but not limited to: Any and all kinds of genre fiction, especially mysteries, science-fiction and fantasy; superheroes; Sherlock Holmes (ACD); history, especially Sengoku Japan, Medieval Europe and interwar France; folklore; food talk; Kuroshitsuji; Puella Magi Madoka Magica; Professor Layton; Les Mis; Doctor Who.

Past fandoms: None, apart from Glee. (There is no Glee on my journal.)

Favourite FFA threads: Les Mis, especially when people start geeking out and discussing fandom. Anything where fans start discussing their canon/characters/whatever in depth with giant walls of text. Write 100 Words and WIP threads because I am nosy, and anything to do with Yuletide wank, which always delivers.

Favourite FFA critter: Belladonna!

Things you’d love to have more conversations about:
- Sci-fi tropes, especially Golden Age pulp stuff (I know, I know, I have no taste!), and my eternal love of time travel plots. Especially stable time loops. My love for stable time loops is eternal.
- I love meta, I love meta-talk, I love watching people discuss things even in fandoms I don’t know and I like people talking about the way fandom in general works.
- All your femslash ships. I’m a multishipper so I’ve also get het and slash pairings I love to flail over but f/f pairs (and any rarepairs) people get enthusiastic over are always interesting.
- WORLDBUILDING. For anything – a fandom, original work, the D&D game you want to run. I love talking about all the ways in which different aspects of a world will come together.
- Speaking of which, tabletop gaming. Tell me of your DMing woes, tell me of how your DM just does not understand you, talk to me of space raiders and elf wizards alike and I will eat it all up with a spoon. :D I love hearing what people think about rules and settings and different adventures, and I like to talk about what I love best in a campaign too.

What your journal’s like:
Empty. Ish. I got it for an exchange letter, tried to convince myself to write more but was too shy to actually try making fandom friends and ended up talking to myself and then feeling kinda stupid. But I want to get back into the habit of writing in it, I just felt weird speaking into the void about any combination of fannish squee and vague personal shit.

Friending dealbreakers:
Barriers to education, especially for people with learning difficulties, and sexual abuse are both topics that hit a little too close to home for me to be comfortable following someone who talks about the latter extensively and the former in a way I disagree with.
In general, wankiness, although I don’t mind watching someone lay the smackdown if it’s deserved and done well. I just think that lots of disagreements when I’m not convinced [hypothetical friend] is even correct would be the sort of thing I’d find wearing.

Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc:
- 21, British, complicated Catholic-agnosticism which mainly manifests in a love of ritual and also an occasional vague sense of guilt about all of my politics. I don’t imagine I’ll be talking about religion but I’ve described myself as culturally Catholic before and I think that’s as good a description as any.
- Currently in a UK university with no idea what I’m going to be doing when I graduate. I’ve been considering post-grad but sometimes I’m just impatient to be finished with life as a student.
- I’m trying to write more, including more fic. I’m not great at it but I have fun, and I put everything under cuts so it should be easy to avoid.
- Queer, but not in the sense where I am straight and occasionally like to spank my similarly straight boyfriend because Judith Butler. Sometimes this means I get political. Mostly it just means that I get hit on by French men and rebuff them in parks (I don’t know either, but that’s happened to me four times this month already).

- Current fandoms: Japanese media in general. A wide variety of anime and manga (though I skip over a number of juggernauts), light novels, visual novels. To name a handful: CLAMP, Minekura Kazuya, PoT, FMA, YGO, YnM, Maiden Rose, Oofuri, Tiger&Bunny, Nitro+Chiral, Spray. Plus numerous others I would totally be in fandom for if they weren't so bloody obscure.

- Fandoms I'm not really fannish about but can totally be convinced into conversation about: Star Trek, pretty much all literature but particularly sf/f/generally speculative stuff.

- Favourite FFA threads: Anything panfandom, meme games, recs, research. Most anything that gets people so excited they start writing walls of text.

- Favourite FFA critter: I'm not a big critter person. The seals are pretty cute, though.

- Things you'd love to have more conversations about: Visual novels! Obscure manga! Tropes! Japanese linguistics!

- What your journal's like (personal/fannish/picspams/etc): Uh, empty as of right now. I just started it. I foresee it containing general fannish discussion--mostly reaction posts, things too sprawling and disorganized to be called legit meta but the same general idea, plus maybe random Japanese language things and translations/summaries of Japanese-fandom related stuff. Probably significant walls of text, because concision is not something I am capable of. No personal posts, no picspam, no fanworks.

- Friending dealbreakers: I need to know about spoilers beforehand. Spoiler cuts, spoiler tags, spoiler warnings, spoiler whitetext, anything, I don't care, just please don't send me into spoilerland without warning me somehow. Also, don't be a dick.

- Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc.: I'm normally a total lurker, but I decided to try spreading out a little bit. If I suddenly vanish off the face of the earth, it's because I need a temporary break from namespace, not because I dislike you. v.v

- Current fandoms: Elementary, Legend of Korra, Doctor Who (classic), Star Trek: TNG (watching for the first time!), Star Wars (original trilogy), Otoyomegatari, Sherlock Holmes (and a lot of Holmes-related media)
- Past fandoms: A list, mostly of manga and obscure book titles that can and will pop up without warning.
- Favourite FFA threads: I am a sucker for the fic recs threads and the fandom-specific threads, like the Elementary threads we did this season.
- Favourite FFA critter: I am not a big critter person, so I guess the ponies.
- Things you'd love to have more conversations about: I would love to have more book discussions. I post about the books I read fairly often and always hope that people will have read them, but that doesn't happen very often. I also tend to gravitate toward female characters really hard so I love to talk about ladies.
- What your journal's like (personal/fannish/picspams/etc): My DW/LJ journals are pretty bare at the moment. I have a hard time just writing about stuff. I do post twice a week - on Sundays, I post about fic writing, and on Wednesday, I post about all the books I read this week. Tumblr and Plurk are much more active. Plurk gets a lot of my Dreamwidth RP stuff, mixed in with fannish stuff. On Tumblr I mostly reblog awesome things in my fandoms, along with some US liberal politics and the occasional SJ post.
- Friending dealbreakers: I am a big lurker, so if you want a friend who will respond to all your posts, I am not that person. Other than that, I have a no-tolerance policy to homophobia and I am really not into conservative politics or religion.
- Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc.
I am a 25-year-old computer programmer living in the Midwestern USA with my partner, and we are getting married in August, which is awesome. I am not the kind of fannish person who digs pretty boys and slash; I am way more into pretty ladies and femslash, and I believe my Tumblr reflects this accurately. (I do have exceptions, who doesn't? R2D2 and C3PO are meant to be.) I write fanfiction sometimes, read constantly, and spend a shameful amount of time on reddit. I love poetry and cats and have pet rats as well (it's Cat TV!). I listen to a lot of podcasts and I post about them sometimes. I like to awkwardly meet people! Hi.

Past fandoms: I wrote a short noncon fic for The Lantern Bearers and a fic that crossed The Eagle over with The Beacon at Alexandria, but other than that I haven't really done anything for other canons I've enjoyed. This may change; I am interested in writing fic for, among other things, the Kushielverse.
Favourite FFA threads: Soooooooo many. I found the "pile-driving" thread hilarious, I always check out "Fic Research," and I've developed a fondness for "Bad Advice." But, best of all, I love the threads that suddenly dissolve into punny, geeky, silly, smutty, and/or absurdist humor, such as many that wind up on the Fuck Yeah FFA Tumblr.
Favourite FFA critter: ¡El Pulpo! ¡Lo echo de menos!
Things you'd love to have more conversations about: Far too many things, and right now I can't really think of any specifically.
What your journal's like (personal/fannish/picspams/etc): My fandom LJ and DW basically just list my fic, and there isn't a lot of it just yet.
Friending dealbreakers: Conservatism/libertarianism; also either focusing on class to the exclusion of everything else, or totally ignoring it. The type of person who complains about "SJWs" when they're actually complaining about trufax social justice. OTOH, actual SJWs, the type who think that whom you ship or slash is the key to your politics. I don't think I have any strictly fannish dealbreakers.
Some other things about you: how you spend your days, secret supervillain objectives, etc. Introvert who needs a lot of alone-time. I internet, I write, I cook, I garden, I am slave to kitteh. Secret supervillain objective: To run a gang of top-notch thieves who break into wherever they need to in order to supply me with gourmet food, expensive booze, any books or music I could ever want, and sex toys.
Sites where you'd like to be added: I rarely use my Tumblrs for fannish things; one is for funny stuff, politics, and keeping up with friends; the other for pretty pics. Both [profile] islandofreil and [livejournal.com profile] islandofreil exist so far only as places to link my fics, but those are the accounts under which I discuss fannish things on other people's LJs and DWs, so please add either/both for same.

Fandoms I am in love with forever: books! Of all sorts! Vorkosigan, Tolkien, Diana Wynne Jones, LeGuin, Susan Cooper, Dante, L'Engle, Megan Whalen Turner, the Mabinogion. Lately I've been obsessively rereading Cynthia Voigt's Tillerman cycle. Also musicals and opera, particularly Mozart operas and the Ring cycle, though lately musicals have been more dominant.

Current fandoms: Les Miserables. The Good Wife. ST:DS9. SGU. Rosemary Sutcliff.

Past fandoms: I still like these and am super-willing to talk about them, but just don't keep up as much. OUAT. (Watched first season, haven't watched much of second season.) Harry Potter. Star Trek:AOS.

Favorite FFA threads: The ones with all kinds of meta-analysis. The Les Mis threads, especially the filks! Also, that one fic-rec thread where I found the two other people (in the world?) who have read (and adored) Cordwainer Smith, and I'm secretly sort of hoping that maybe they're on this thread too :) Oh, also that thread about Bible fanwank -- I adored the idea of a nice fanwank fight about Jacob/Leah vs. Jacob/Rachel ships, etc.

Things you'd love to have more conversations about: Meta! Books! Music! (And Bible fanwank! And Cordwainer Smith!)

What your journal's like: Mostly lots of rambling on about books and music. Let's see.. lately I've posted on L'Engle, Phantom of the Opera recordings, marble runs, various Sutcliff books, and the book Admission by Jean Korelitz. Sometimes I post every day, and sometimes I go weeks without posting. Recently I've been trying to read more meaty books and do multiple posts about them; so far I've done Les Mis and the Aeneid, and I think I might do Moby-Dick next.

Friending dealbreakers: Too much demonization of any side of the political spectrum.

Some other things about you: I have a geeky husband and a small kid, whom I talk about infrequently. My job is in technical analysis. I sing in choir and do other music-ish things.

Sites where you'd like to be added: Most active on dreamwidth as [personal profile] cahn, partially because work blocks LJ and partially because everyone else I know is on DW now. I also write fic on dreamwidth as [personal profile] raspberryhunter, and am on LJ as [livejournal.com profile] charlie_ego and [livejournal.com profile] berryhunter respectively.

You want to have conversations about Cordwainer Smith?
If I hadn't added you before I saw that part I would be adding you so hard right now.

nooooooo I am not, I so wish I were that cool! (I was the other nonnie who was all "ooh Yuletide Cordwainer Smith!" Are you the one I was talking to? HI THERE! I've wished ever since then that I could hang out with you! If we could just find the Do You Hear The Underpeople Sing nonnie my joy would be complete! :) )

but yes yes to conversations about Cordwainer Smith! Although I don't have anything coherent to say, actually, except LOVE SO MUCH WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD READ THESE AND LOVE THEM, and also I need to read Baudelaire and maybe a couple thousand more things so I can actually get any of his allusions...

Hmm, want to do a reread? :)

Yes, I was! HELLO.

Yeah, it's more squee than converse, I think.

I would love to do a reread, but my books are on the other side of the world from me until September. Autumn reread in time for Yuletide Rediscovery of Man?
