Date: 2017-04-21 10:37 pm (UTC)It took me a while to get my head around Crais, but then, that's intentional...
interactions I enjoyed the most
Oh, lord, you have so much to choose from with this show. I really loved how increasingly weird and ambivalent John's interactions with Scorpius became.
the character who scares me the most
Scorpius. He really is terrifying at the beginning!
the character who is mostly like me
I suppose it works so well because in a way we are all John Crichton: existing half in wonder, half in WTF.
hottest looks character
I didn't really have crushes on anyone in this show, but Aeryn and Crais are both attractive.
one thing I dislike about my fave character
I think Scorpius ended up being my favourite, and well, it's not HARD to find things to criticise about Scorpius. :P
one thing I like about my hated character
I'm a sucker for the archly evil.
a quote or scene that haunts me
John being beheaded after being turned into a statue in that story arc where he was going to have to marry an alien princess. That really fucked with my head!
a death that left me indifferent
I actually don't remember - I don't think much about Farscape left me indifferent...
a character I wish died but didn’t
I don't think there was anyone like this - I'm rarely so strongly averse to characters in fiction (a couple of psychopaths in GoT being the exceptions)...
my ship that never sailed
Being mostly a canon shipper is a lucky thing in this respect - my huge ship in this show was Aeryn/John, so I came out of it without regrets.

interactions I enjoyed the most
Ohhhh, man. It was just such a great ensemble show that you could pick out a lot - I always enjoyed the old married couple vibe of Adama and Tigh, and also the relationship between Adama and Starbuck and how the death of Zak hung between them.
the character who scares me the most
I was scared of the Cylons when they looked like robots...
the character who is mostly like me
Felix Gaeta - I can relate to both his idealism and the way that it curdles.
hottest looks character
I ended up with a crush on Baltar, but Starbuck is amazingly magnetic. Caprica Six is the glamorous woman I'll never be. There's probably people I'm forgetting; it was a very attractive cast overall...
one thing I dislike about my fave character
My favourites were Starbuck and Baltar. Baltar's easy, because you're supposed to be appalled by his selfishness and duplicity. With Starbuck, I remember being dismayed when she just slid into the whole religious quest thing for the arrow - I hadn't expected the show to uncritically endorse the state religion of the characters and it felt weird that someone who was such a cynical rebel would be so into it.
one thing I like about my hated character
I gradually found that I couldn't stand Laura Roslin, but I was very touched by her growing relationship with Adama.
a quote or scene that haunts me
Starbuck admitting her responsibility for the death of Zak, and Bill Adama taking that information in, is a painful moment...
a death that left me indifferent
I don't think there were any - it was a very polarising show and I was frequently polarised!
a character I wish died but didn’t
Again, I don't think there's anyone - firstly because that show killed people left and right, and secondly because, as per my answer to
my ship that never sailed
It would've been interesting if Adama and Tigh had turned out to have another dimension to their close, decades-long relationship...

Date: 2017-04-22 01:58 pm (UTC)It's been absolutely ages since I saw BSG, but your answers are now jogging my memory, and I'm recalling that I felt very similarly about several of the things you mention. Especially Starbuck. I LOVE her. SO MUCH. She was always my favourite. But I totally agree that the way her arc was handled later on (post-New Caprica onward) was rather bizarre, not to mention, as you say, even OOC at times. It's not that don't appreciate explorations of religions and religious topics in sci-fi (obviously!), but moreso that I didn't really enjoy the way the show handled that side of things in general in the final seasons. It just didn't 'work' for me, for whatever reason. And there were several characters whose storylines suffered as a result.
But yeah... overall, the BSG reboot had some very compelling characters, as well as some fascinating character interactions and relationships. I also remember loving the visuals for the most part, and thinking the space battles and whatnot were well done. I just recall wishing that the second half of the series had been just a *little* less convoluted, plot-wise. ;p
I'm also with you on not really being inclined toward 'hating on' characters. (Certain extreme psychopatic/villainous types being the exception, lol.) Usually I try to just focus on the characters and relationships that I *do* like. :)

If we confine this to the main characters, I think I'd go with Armand - there's an essay Anne wrote ("Twenty-One Years with my Beloved Immortals", I think) that appeared in the trade paperback of the comic adaptation of TTOTBT, where she says Armand's mindset is alien to hers; SHE doesn't "get" him the way she does someone like Lestat. And there's Louis, to a lesser degree, though maybe it's just that I disagree with him so profoundly on some things...
interactions I enjoyed the most
Oh god, we'll be here all day! I adore Marius and Pandora in her book; Thorne and Marius will later call their conflict "a good quarrelling". It's angsty to read sometimes, but I always like the feeling that you're watching two mature adults have a relationship, rather than two people who are still trying to self-define. These two have defined themselves just fine, and their conflict comes from very different approaches to themselves. I find that interesting.
Also, I guess this would be everyone's answer, but Daniel and Armand in QotD... that whole section is sheer gold. And I'm very, very fond of David and Lestat together.
the character who scares me the most
I guess Akasha for her sheer, unpersuadable implacability. Nothing like a leader who has a bizarre, violent "solution" to deep, complex social problems, and can't be swayed. :|
the character who is mostly like me
Jesse and I have some very formative stuff in common, only she didn't know either of her parents. We're the same age now (or at least, she was 35 when she was turned), and every time I come back to her section of QotD it hits me more deeply, how very much I understand what she's searching for and why she won't be turned from it.
hottest looks character
ALMOST EVERYONE IS HOT. IT'S EVEN A PLOT POINT! If they actually do manage to make that TV series, the collective hotness of the cast will freaking break the internet! Clearly Lestat is the hottest, most magnetic being who ever lived, and he'd pout if I said otherwise. :P
one thing I dislike about my fave character
Almost his entire handling of his relationship with Armand. But on a deeper level, it's something he does with nearly everyone he's close to: the deep conviction that he knows best, for everyone. It says a lot that his one relationship with an equal ended the way it did and has never been able to re-coalesce: Pandora just knows him too well.
one thing I like about my hated character
Collectively, that would be the Replimoids... I have to say, the whole body horror reproduction thing they're capable of is very cool.
a quote or scene that haunts me
Off the top of my head, Lestat experiencing the Dark Moment and then that realisation, that idea of the universe, never really going away.
a death that left me indifferent
I'll give Anne this - I don't think I've been indifferent to any of the deaths. And I'm still steaming mad about Eric! Off the page, even!
a character I wish died but didn’t
I feel I could have done without Amel surviving PLROA, but who knows, maybe she'll find a good way to use him in the next one...
my ship that never sailed
I'm generally a canon shipper, so I don't have a lot of problems in this area, but I would've liked to see some fanon ships like Eric/Santino happen in canon. A Marius/Pandora/Flavius trio would've been nice, too.

Date: 2017-04-22 05:42 pm (UTC)At this point? Polly. WHY ARE YOU WITH THIS MAN YOU HATE AND DON'T APPRECIATE. WHY.
interactions I enjoyed the most
Jonathan and Maddy are a shoo-in for this, really!
the character who scares me the most
David Renwick. :P
the character who is mostly like me
Probably Jonathan - earlier Jonathan, not current Jonathan.
hottest looks character
I don't think there's really anyone I find hot, but then, that's not what I'm watching it for...
one thing I dislike about my fave character
Well, there's times in the earlier seasons when he can be quite set in his ways and doesn't realise that sometimes it's more important to be kind than right...
one thing I like about my hated character
Polly has had her moments, when you could actually see how they could once have got on well...
a quote or scene that haunts me
That business about your pupils dilating when you're attracted to someone, and all the fall-out from it!
a death that left me indifferent
Well, the whole thing tends to be set up by someone having died, so I haven't generally had the most compassionate attitude to the deaths. :P
a character I wish died but didn’t
I haven't wished death on anybody; I don't usually feel that strongly about my character dislikes! I'd settle for Polly just appreciating him...
my ship that never sailed
*turns away dramatically, for it cannot be spoken of without tears*

I suppose the Old Ones in general remain rather shadowy; I'd love to have a frank conversation with Merriman or the Lady about their lives and motivations.
interactions I enjoyed the most
I liked the mentor/pupil thing between Merriman and Will, and generally I really enjoyed the realistic drift from wariness to tolerance (if not always trust or liking) between Will and the Drew children in the first instance, and then between the Drews and Bran. It's something adults often forget about the behaviour and feelings of children who have been thrown together by adults.
the character who scares me the most
The fake vicar in the first book was enjoyably creepy, but morally speaking, the Old Ones are actually kind of unsettling when you think about them enough.
the character who is mostly like me
Jane in Greenwitch, I suspect.
hottest looks character
I don't think there's anyone fanciable in these books!
one thing I dislike about my fave character
Not sure I have a clear favourite - I like Will but find he's very locked into the plot by his fate, so he doesn't have to have much agency a lot of the time. Jane took time to grow on me because in the first book she's kind of a sexist stereotype of "the girl who trails behind her brothers complaining". Fortunately, she transcends that later. Merriman is tropey as hell, but a trope I happen to like. His relationship with Hawkin seems really unfortunate, though - did Hawkin really feel he could say no to protecting that Sign?
one thing I like about my hated character
I don't think there's anyone I hate.
a quote or scene that haunts me
That business with the sad king in Silver on the Tree...
a death that left me indifferent
I don't actually remember any!
a character I wish died but didn’t
That's the funny thing about books that are so dependent on the notion of fate - if someone doesn't die, they must still be fulfilling some purpose. And I'm not a great one for hating characters to the extent I wish they'd die, anyway.
my ship that never sailed
I was happy that the books didn't get shippy because the kids are that bit too young, but I did have a sense that something might have eventually developed between Jane and Will, given enough time... and if Jane had been allowed to remember all that happened. *still bears a grudge*

Date: 2017-05-28 01:06 pm (UTC)I've probably got less in common with Stewart than either of the other guys. Miles is a mystery (though in his elder brother role he reminds me weirdly of R's elder brother despite dissimilar personalities). And I just don't know a whole lot about Henri...
Also, the biggest mystery of the Police era is how anyone could put out an album with this artist logo and not go, "SHIT! SHIT! Resize those Ks!"
interactions I enjoyed the most
I just fell down a clickhole for an hour, googling unseemly things like "Sting's butt". It was terrible. Yes, terrible... but eventually I dug through my old laptop and found this again, which I think is the greatest interaction between one band member and another('s butt) of all time:
I'm also a huge fan of the rehearsal scenes on Better Than Therapy.
And there's always, "I blame the man holding the camera for all of my problems."
And then there was the time with Andy and the sumo wrestler...
the character who scares me the most
Well, I think Miles is kind of intimidating...
the character who is mostly like me
Sting is probably most like me, but with a better work ethic. If we're going with songs, Does Everyone Stare? is very me. Tentativeness, uncertainty, absurdity. I love that it's a song that has both the lines, "I never noticed the size of my feet... until I kicked you in the shins," AND "I want to write you a sonnet but I don't know where to start / I'm so used to laughing at the things in my heart"...
hottest looks character
I refer you to that clickhole I ended up in earlier.
one thing I dislike about my fave character
The quavering uncertainty of not knowing if the 57th & 9th tour will come here or not.
one thing I like about my hated character
Nah, I don't hate any of them.
a quote or scene that haunts me
Hearing the Last Exit version of I Burn For You for the first time was pretty haunting. It's like that thing in High Fidelity where the narrator talks about seeing a childhood photo of Paul McCartney and thinking,
"Wow, he doesn't know, he's got all that in front of him." At the same time, he was ambitious as hell and the songwriting chops were already there.
a death that left me indifferent
This breaks down when it comes to RL fandoms - taken together with the next question (strike it, reverse it, thank you), I think we all wish Kim and Ian were still in the land of the living...
a character I wish died but didn’t
Let's make that an instrument. Whenever I listen to Ghost in the Machine, I'm often struck by the fact that little of value would have been lost if Sting hadn't had sax lessons and then wanted to play sax on half the songs on that album...
my ship that never sailed
If I may include stuff from their solo careers, it is a goddamn tragedy for my two main fandoms that the talks about Sting doing an Interview with the Vampire musical never came to anything.
no subject
Date: 2017-05-28 07:59 pm (UTC)oh shit, that IS a shame.
Nice use of Sting's arse and tiny tiny shorts (and Stewart in tiny shorts too! I think someone- probably sidewinder- once wrote tiny shorts related fic and I need to reread that). My favourite interactions are every time Sting pokes Andy, annoys Andy, touches Andy, or is a bitch to Andy. Or whenever any one of them bitches at anyone else.
I'm too casual a fan to really say much about their music though fic means I've watched way too much footage of them talking and/or fighting, but your Ghost in the Machine opinions seem solid to me.
