We've reached the closing curtain of our beautiful Snowflake Challenge 2026. It's been a whirlwind month of fun, community, and lots of creativity! One of the best parts of this challenge is that it truly lives up to its name and its original inspiration: every single year that we come together to celebrate is a unique circumstance of participants, mods, prompts, graphics, challenges, and celebrations. Every year is a unique snowflake in and of itself, never again to be replicated in the exact same pattern. I hope everyone felt some enjoyment and appreciation during the past month, and of course please continue to post your responses and fills because there is no deadline to this challenge!

Thank you so much to all the participants. Thank you especially to those who took the time to interact with fellow participants and make the community feel so alive! And of course thank you to all the mods who went above and beyond and especially to [personal profile] tjs_whatnot, our co-admin who has worked really hard this month to keep everything running smoothly.

We do have a poll below to get your feedback on the challenge, if that's something you're interested in doing. We really appreciate it and we take all your responses into consideration when planning for next year.

Peace and happy late winter season to all!

Poll under the cut! )

Not, apparently, the same person

I keep seeing the name 'Ratner' in connection with the Fantastic Flopping Vanity Movie - he's the director? - and apparently he is not the same Ratner who crashed the value of a chain of jewellers in the early 1990s:

Ratner made a speech addressing a conference of the Institute of Directors at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 April 1991. During the speech, he commented:
We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap."

He compounded this by going on to remark that one of the sets of earrings was "cheaper than a prawn sandwich from Marks and Spencer's, but I have to say the sandwich will probably last longer than the earrings". Ratner made a guest appearance on TV chat show Wogan the day after his speech, where he apologised and explained his joking remark that some of his company's products were "total crap". Ratner's comments have become textbook examples of why CEOs should choose their words carefully. In the furore that ensued, customers stayed away from Ratner shops.
After the speech, the value of the Ratner Group plummeted by around £500 million, which very nearly resulted in the group's collapse.

But, you know, at least a certain honesty there?

In happier business, there's a charming piece here by Jackie French (author of Diary of a Wombat about her real-life relationship with wombats, in particular the one who was the inspiration for the book.

A factoid exploded:

I hear her snort each time someone declares that wombat droppings are square. (They can be – but only when their food is dry. When it’s lush grass, they’re long and green.)

[community profile] newcomers is a community for people who are just getting started on Dreamwidth, in the tradition of [community profile] twitter_refugees and [community profile] reddit_refugees. This community supports former users of other platforms who are moving to Dreamwidth because their previous platform has become untenable or has closed. It also serves previous users returning after a long hiatus, people who want to do more with a Dreamwidth blog that was only intermittent, or anyone else who wants help connecting and figuring out how to use this venue.

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posting in [site community profile] dw_community_promo
[community profile] goals_on_dw is a community for people who like goals and goal setting. A key focus is New Year's resolutions, that being among the most popular contexts for such activities. Although the most common time is January 1, "new year" can also refer to other calendars or cultures, whatever works for you. Alternatively, just pick a time that works for you and go for it. You can introduce yourself or make new friends here.

We talk about different goal systems, pros and cons of resolutions, arts and crafts for tracking goals, human psychology, and more. You can share your resolutions or other goals. There are weekly check-in posts in January, and monthly ones in the rest of the year, for folks to talk about their accomplishments. December-January is the most active period, and it starts ramping up in November as lots of people begin thinking about their goals for the next year.

2026 Free Printable Calendars, Planners, and More is the guide post for this years goal-setting activities. For more details on relevant topics, see "Things You Can Talk About Here."

This week I learned about the Golden Poppy Award! I'd never heard of it before.
The California Independent Booksellers Alliance (CALIBA) presents the 2025 Golden Poppy Awards in recognition of the most distinguished books written and illustrated by creators who have made California their home.

There's tons of categories, I made a direct dash to the Octavia E. Butler Award for science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
I dug into the Intergalactic Mixtape archives to see what reviewers were saying about these books, because this is one of my most favorite nerdy things to do. I had reviews for Automatic Noodle, The Night and the Moth, Notes from a Regicide, and Red City. Alas, I had none for Kill the Beast, which is interesting because it came out in October, after I had expanded my review sources. But! The mixtape is still a baby.

If you like reading multiple opinions of books, this may interest you! Read more... )
