The husband decided to put a car battery on our fitted carpet soon after we moved in as newlyweds. He picked it up and voila! a circular acid burn. This patterned carpet covered the combined dining/ sitting room in one piece so was about 12m long. The same carpet covered the hall, stairs, upstairs landing and bathroom (not our choice: it was in when we bought the house). After the recriminations died down, I chose to sacrifice the bathroom carpet. I located the right part of the pattern, used fabric shears to cut out a big piece, took it downstairs and matched the pattern with the damaged part then trimmed the piece to the right shape. The tricky bit was cutting out the damaged part as it was tightly laid but when it was out the replacement piece matched beautifully. Then I used one of those curved carpet needles that you get in a needle pack and think you'll never use, found some strong button thread in red (a red and gold carpet, again not my choice) and stitched the piece in place. Completely invisible. We replaced the bathroom carpet with a more suitable fabric and colour. That repair lasted about eight years until we could afford new carpet...and thereby hangs another tale of me accidentally setting fire to the kitchen and the insurance paying for new carpet throughout because of smoke damage!
