Friday open thread: internet magpies

Today's post is low-effort on my part, but hopefully produces some fun things in the comments.

The prompt is: share something wonderful that you've recently found online.

My link, gathered, magpie-like during my wanderings, is this latest video from [instagram.com profile] wisdm. I did test it to check it would display even when not logged in to Instagram, but Instagram links can go a bit funny, so please let me know if you run into issues.

I won't say anything further, except to say that Wisdom Kaye's is one of my favourite accounts on Instagram, and this linked post is (Halloween) seasonally appropriate, and amazing.

Edited to add this excellent new song by Rue Oberkampf.

Assortment

Dept of, what will they think of next (some of this is, as I remarked elsewhere, resuscitating Ye Good Ol' Victorian Quackerie - though, as we concurred, VIBRATORS ARE NOT VICTORIAN!!!): With the menopause dildo, we've officially reached peak menopause bollocks.

(Declaration of interest: I once did a podcast with the author.)

***

Dept of, well, on the topic of dildos, or at least, urgent phallicism: I spent a year dating conservative [frothingly alt-right] men:

Something about getting ready to go on these dates made me feel like I was 18 again — except now I had the ability to run professional-level background checks, which I did. Not because I was operating on preconceived notions but because the few peers I told about my mission encouraged me to. Given some of the vitriol against women in online alt-right groups, they felt I should treat every date as if it were a threat to my life. I came up with a routine: before a date, I’d tell at least three people in advance where I was going and what time they should expect to hear from me by. I enlisted a friend who’s a former Navy SEAL to be my unofficial security consultant.

And they wonder why women are not dating....

And that's before getting to meet the actual doozies who are, apparently, not even the worst types on the dating apps.

***

Dept of, let's have some better news, good news about snails (the snails that one thought had been mown down in the ONward March of Progress, or at least, building much needed housing):

the snails are OK. Nothing bad is going to happen to the poor little Whirlpool Ramshorn Snail, the endangered creature which our Chancellor unfairly blamed for stopping a housing development, causing me to get grumpy on social media. But in following up to try and see what actually happened, I found out a bunch of interesting – and in my view extremely heartening – stuff.
.... it was always a false dichotomy, it was always possible to have the houses and the snails too.

***

Dept of gilded snails in a very different space: From snails to street signs: Soho’s history revealed on a new digital map - the snails on the facade of L'Escargot Restaurant.

***

Dept of, gosh I have met (many years ago) the curator of this exhibition: New York City celebrates the “Gay Harlem Renaissance”

Boy Scouts Handbook - First Edition

Boy Scouts Handbook - First Edition

The first edition. A hodgepodge perhaps chiefly of interest in what is included. Games. Short history and civics lessons. Discussions of wildlife and tracking. First aid. How to earn badges.

Some articles show that science has marched on from the day.

Sayings from Indians are invariably in crude English, but also invariably are to teach wise things to the boys.

I noted that in the fire section, they discussed the danger of wildfires, but didn't mention that first of all, you ensure you build your fire on bare earth. Anything burnable will carry the fire away, and roots are particularly dangerous. So, health and safety information may also be out of date.

Profits of Doom: JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #14-15 (JLI 17/?)

Last time out, we showcased Fire and Ice Green Flame and Ice Maiden as two heroines who spend a night living beyond their means and a morning struggling to make ends meet. In this, they have more in common with an extragalactic starship and its crew than they could imagine.

Nobody ever talks about the COST of maintaining moon-sized ships, but if the Galactic Empire had managed its spending better, its Death Stars might not have so many corridors full of bottomless pits to fall into. )

The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured WorldThe War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World by Jamil Zaki

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book for my Faculty Learning Community. It's not specifically about pedagogy; instead it's from a psychological/sociological perspective and seeks to explain factors that generate empathy/kindness and those which prevent empathy/kindness. Zaki talks about experiments conducted on college campuses and about interventions designed to help white supremacists extricate themselves from hate groups. Really fascinating book.

podcast friday

HAPPY SPOOOOKY DAY and blessed Samhain if that's your thing.

This week's podcast episode sure is spooooooky! It's It Could Happen Here's "Occulture, William S. Burroughs, and Generative AI," and the moment that title popped up in my feed, I knew I'd be talking about it (even though I Don't Speak German covered Mother Night, this week, which is my favourite Vonnegut book. Maybe I'll talk about that one next week).

I had never heard of the Occulture conference, which is...what you think it is. As a good little Marxist materialist, I am not a chaos magick practitioner or believer as such except that definitely magic and the occult are a terrain we should not cede to the enemy so I am not not a chaos magick believer, y'know? At the very least as a philosophical and narrative system it's something that I'm quite interested in.

And of course for all his being one of the most Problematic Faves of all my Problematic Faves—he killed his wife ffs—I never really got over my teenage obsession with William S. Burroughs. As the episode points out, he's lumped in with the Beats but more properly belongs with the Surrealists (and the Dadaists) in terms of what he was doing. And y'all know how I feel about the Surrealists and the Dadaists. So there's an unexpected amount of discussion of Burroughs as a magickian at the the conference and his techniques (some of which were extremely funny, such as cursing a restaurant that took his favourite thing off the menu) and particularly his use of technology to channel the non-human.

Which brings me to the argument that I get into way too fucking much, which is "well isn't GenAI basically the same as cut-up poetry," and that's apparently something that was asked repeatedly at this conference. Spoiler: No it is not. Like, neither artistically nor magickically, which is a relief as that wasn't necessarily where the discussion might have gone. The short version has to do with Third Mind theory, which is quite interesting, and again, I feel there's a much more materialist explanation for why it's not the same but I also appreciate the occultist explanation.

Anyway it's a big meaty feast for my special interests and apparently there will be a second part dropping this weekend, so yay!

Name: I go by many of them. Recently, I've been on a Lucy kick, but I also go by Maggie, Saros, and Venus, among others. And the titles. Don't forget the titles.

Age: 19 (20 soon)

I mostly post about: Daily life, media I'm engaging with. Trying to post more about my OCs/fannish stuff, but it's scary. I dearly love my OC Vesper and her partner Roan and and will talk so much about them if you ask!

My hobbies are: Ballet (been doing it since I was a little kid and currently still doing pointe, albeit as a hobbyist), digital art, DIY fashion (alt/goth), creative writing. Huge music nerd--I'm into dark cabaret, goth, digital hardcore, industrial, among others. My favorite artist is Ada Rook of Black Dresses.

My fandoms are: Honestly, it's been 99% Vesperoan lately. Selfshipping! I'm a huge selfshipper and that makes up a lot of the fannish stuff I do. Some of my F/Os are Double Trouble from She-Ra, Whitney the Bully from Degrees of Lewdity, Xenon from Cytus II, and Greely from Animal Jam. Neither here nor there, but Evangelion is extremely near and dear to my heart. I've also been a VOCALOID fan for 9 years now.

I'm looking to meet people who: Post frequently so I have stuff to read on my reading page :) Being into my writing would also be a huge plus! I'm still trying to set up a comm specifically for Vesperoan.

My posting schedule tends to be: Pretty much daily, sometimes I miss a day or post multiple times a day.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Sanists, transmisogynists, other bigots. Minors (please stay safe!).

Before adding me, you should know: Lucy likes referring to herself in third person. She's into a lot of dark and explicit content. It will be placed below an 18+ screen with a warning/reason given, but still, if one is squicked out by the content detailed in her pinned post, maybe best not to follow! No minors for this reason.

Cemetery Kids Don't Die #3 is traumatic horror.

Issue #2'd ended on physical trauma - Enid, one of three going deeper into the VR game Nightmare Cemetery, getting stabbed in the eye.

It was an in-game injury, inflicted by the same thing that'd taken her friend Birdie's brother Pik. He was comatose in the real world - she, waking into it, was bleeding.

Birdie and their friend Wilson saw her the next day.

"Wait...We Can Write WOMEN?": Introducing Green Flame (Fire) & Ice Maiden (Ice) (JLI 16/?)

As this JLI retrospective has chugged along, I've done my best to provide some context. But this time, the context is so involved, I figured I should make a separate post that's all context.

For its first four issues, the Justice League/Justice League International series was at a Bechdel 1. Then female villains stopped appearing and Doctor Light stormed out, putting it at a Bechdel 0...until #12, when two new characters rocketed it to Bechdel 3--where it would remain, more often than not, for as long as they were part of the series.

Also from 2 nations represented up to 4. )
