podcast friday

HAPPY SPOOOOKY DAY and blessed Samhain if that's your thing.

This week's podcast episode sure is spooooooky! It's It Could Happen Here's "Occulture, William S. Burroughs, and Generative AI," and the moment that title popped up in my feed, I knew I'd be talking about it (even though I Don't Speak German covered Mother Night, this week, which is my favourite Vonnegut book. Maybe I'll talk about that one next week).

I had never heard of the Occulture conference, which is...what you think it is. As a good little Marxist materialist, I am not a chaos magick practitioner or believer as such except that definitely magic and the occult are a terrain we should not cede to the enemy so I am not not a chaos magick believer, y'know? At the very least as a philosophical and narrative system it's something that I'm quite interested in.

And of course for all his being one of the most Problematic Faves of all my Problematic Faves—he killed his wife ffs—I never really got over my teenage obsession with William S. Burroughs. As the episode points out, he's lumped in with the Beats but more properly belongs with the Surrealists (and the Dadaists) in terms of what he was doing. And y'all know how I feel about the Surrealists and the Dadaists. So there's an unexpected amount of discussion of Burroughs as a magickian at the the conference and his techniques (some of which were extremely funny, such as cursing a restaurant that took his favourite thing off the menu) and particularly his use of technology to channel the non-human.

Which brings me to the argument that I get into way too fucking much, which is "well isn't GenAI basically the same as cut-up poetry," and that's apparently something that was asked repeatedly at this conference. Spoiler: No it is not. Like, neither artistically nor magickically, which is a relief as that wasn't necessarily where the discussion might have gone. The short version has to do with Third Mind theory, which is quite interesting, and again, I feel there's a much more materialist explanation for why it's not the same but I also appreciate the occultist explanation.

Anyway it's a big meaty feast for my special interests and apparently there will be a second part dropping this weekend, so yay!

Name: I go by many of them. Recently, I've been on a Lucy kick, but I also go by Maggie, Saros, and Venus, among others. And the titles. Don't forget the titles.

Age: 19 (20 soon)

I mostly post about: Daily life, media I'm engaging with. Trying to post more about my OCs/fannish stuff, but it's scary. I dearly love my OC Vesper and her partner Roan and and will talk so much about them if you ask!

My hobbies are: Ballet (been doing it since I was a little kid and currently still doing pointe, albeit as a hobbyist), digital art, DIY fashion (alt/goth), creative writing. Huge music nerd--I'm into dark cabaret, goth, digital hardcore, industrial, among others. My favorite artist is Ada Rook of Black Dresses.

My fandoms are: Honestly, it's been 99% Vesperoan lately. Selfshipping! I'm a huge selfshipper and that makes up a lot of the fannish stuff I do. Some of my F/Os are Double Trouble from She-Ra, Whitney the Bully from Degrees of Lewdity, Xenon from Cytus II, and Greely from Animal Jam. Neither here nor there, but Evangelion is extremely near and dear to my heart. I've also been a VOCALOID fan for 9 years now.

I'm looking to meet people who: Post frequently so I have stuff to read on my reading page :) Being into my writing would also be a huge plus! I'm still trying to set up a comm specifically for Vesperoan.

My posting schedule tends to be: Pretty much daily, sometimes I miss a day or post multiple times a day.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Sanists, transmisogynists, other bigots. Minors (please stay safe!).

Before adding me, you should know: Lucy likes referring to herself in third person. She's into a lot of dark and explicit content. It will be placed below an 18+ screen with a warning/reason given, but still, if one is squicked out by the content detailed in her pinned post, maybe best not to follow! No minors for this reason.

Cemetery Kids Don't Die #3 is traumatic horror.

Issue #2'd ended on physical trauma - Enid, one of three going deeper into the VR game Nightmare Cemetery, getting stabbed in the eye.

It was an in-game injury, inflicted by the same thing that'd taken her friend Birdie's brother Pik. He was comatose in the real world - she, waking into it, was bleeding.

Birdie and their friend Wilson saw her the next day.

"Wait...We Can Write WOMEN?": Introducing Green Flame (Fire) & Ice Maiden (Ice) (JLI 16/?)

As this JLI retrospective has chugged along, I've done my best to provide some context. But this time, the context is so involved, I figured I should make a separate post that's all context.

For its first four issues, the Justice League/Justice League International series was at a Bechdel 1. Then female villains stopped appearing and Doctor Light stormed out, putting it at a Bechdel 0...until #12, when two new characters rocketed it to Bechdel 3--where it would remain, more often than not, for as long as they were part of the series.

Also from 2 nations represented up to 4. )

If you gotta ask, you ain't gottit

Or words to that effect.

Anyway, general sense of Point Thahr, Misst, in this piece: Can I learn to be cool – even though I am garrulous, swotty and wear no-show socks?

Mind you, and perhaps this is a generational thing, I murmur, thinking of dark jazz cellars and so on, I so do not associate 'cool' with:

Cool people are desirable and in demand; others want to be them or be with them. That social clout readily converts into capital as people buy what you’re selling, hoping it will rub off on them.... A much-publicised paper recently published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that cool people are seen as possessing six attributes: they are extroverted, open, hedonistic, adventurous, autonomous and powerful.

WOT.

And further on, we have an interview with somebody author of article considers Peak Cool:

[S]tudying fashion in London, she learned how to talk her way into fashion week events, pretending she was “supposed to be there – like, no doubt about it”, she says, eyes glinting. She then parlayed that talent for networking into styling and creative consulting work. “All the coolest people I know are hustlers,” Delaney says. “If you’ve just had it given to you, then it’s not that cool.”

Hustlers??? The truly cool do not hustle.

Perhaps this strikes me as particularly Not Getting It because I have just been reading Eve Babitz?

And IMHO, you do not 'learn' to be cool: if you are cool, what you do is imbued with coolth, even if it doesn't tick the obvious boxes.

The Friday Five for 31 October 2025

These questions were originally suggested by [livejournal.com profile] twirlandswirl.

1. Did you vote in your most recent applicable election? (If you're not yet old enough, do you plan to vote in the future?)

2. Have you ever protested or attended a march?

3. What political issue is the most important to you?

4. Are you a member of a party in your country? If so, which?

5. Do you ever plan to run for office?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

Name: Sadie

Age: early 30s

I mostly post about: My life, thoughts, and things I get up to, things I draw or create, places I've been to, something cool I've bought recently, etc. I might occasionally post about media I've consumed, but I don't really post fandom content unless it's relevant to my life in some way (like I've gone to a gig). I save that stuff for Tumblr.

My hobbies are:
Drawing (I'm an illustrator and have a degree in it), journals and stationery (I love my Filofax and Hobonichi ♥), Japanese street fashion (I wear EGL a lot), musical theatre, travel (I've lived in Japan and South Korea teaching English), wandering through the woods, taking photos, digging through junk shops, playing The Sims 4 and Animal Crossing, learning languages, and building Lego.

My fandoms are:
My favourite movies right now are Conclave and the new Frankenstein. My favourite bands are My Chemical Romance, Ghost, and System of a Down. I'm also a Disney adult and unashamed of that, I've been to every park except Hong Kong and Shanghai. My favourite authors are Tove Jansson and Stephen King (I read and watch a lot of horror, but not slashers which are kinda boring tbh), and some of my favourite novels are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Watership Down, The Phantom of the Opera, and Animal Farm.

I'm looking to meet people who:
Nice people who I can actually befriend. I like to form friendships with people on my friends list, and not feel like it's a transactional "comment for comment" kind of vibe which feels disingenuous 💔 We're reading each others diaries after all.

My posting schedule tends to be:
Whenever I feel like I have something to say, but I try to aim for at least once a week. I'm trying to get back into the habit of updating regularly after I had a bad experience with someone who made me feel self-conscious about what I post, and I'm trying hard to stop overthinking it and get back to posting whatever I feel like, but sometimes it's difficult and I struggle with that 'no one cares' voice. But I also realise no one knows me if I only update once in a blue moon and never say anything about myself.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:
Judgey people and the usual bigots. Also if all you post about are fandoms that we don't share, media reviews, or your kids/partner, I'm not going to have anything to say about that and will likely end up skipping over your entries. I want to get to know YOU.

Before adding me, you should know:
I don't post about it much, but I have a chronic illness and I'm disabled. It usually comes up as vague mentions of being tired/in pain/struggling etc, but that's what I'm referring to.
