I sometimes think more trouble is caused by partial knowledge than complete ignorance - as you say, she refers to the "full packet of DNA", and that and other terms suggests she has some understanding of the subject, but she's got it mixed up.
And yeah, I think they definitely intended a male embryo; whatever it is they intended, they needed a child as much like Lestat as possible... that, or the prospect of two Gabrielles in the world was just TOO MUCH FIERCE for them to handle. Speaking of which, on Tumblr lavinia-del-mortalium and I have this convo going about how we may never be over the fact Gabrielle is now a grandmother.
